Morphing Wing
One of the more interesting projects I worked on while in college, was a morphing wing aircraft. Instead of using standard control surfaces such as ailerons or elevators which are deflected by motors, we used a new brand of piezoelectric smart materials, Micro Fiber Composites (MFCs), to morph the shape of the wing. The lack of moving parts also allows for a more robust design. The potential of morphing wing technology extends far beyond the benefits exhibited by our prototype and is actively being researched and developed in the aerospace world.
